A Philosophy of Making Place
At smitharc, we see design as a quiet act of translation: transforming human aspiration into space, structure into experience, and material into meaning.
We believe buildings should not shout. They should resonate.
They should reveal themselves cinematically in a series of experiences that create a Place in memory.
Every project is an exploration of tension… between permanence and change, weight and lightness, restraint and expression. We search for clarity in complexity and poetry in precision. Geometry becomes narrative. Structure becomes rhythm. Light becomes the material that binds everything together.
Context is not a constraint; it is a collaborator.
We create in conversation with client, site, climate, and culture… allowing each project to emerge as if it always belonged.
Time is our silent partner.
We create architecture meant to weather, to mature, to deepen in character. Spaces that feel inevitable rather than imposed. Forms that are discovered rather than declared.
At smitharc, we do not pursue style. We pursue essence.
Because meaningful architecture is not simply seen, it is felt, remembered, and inhabited.
Jason Erik Smith, AIA | Principal + Design Director
Jason approaches each project as both a design challenge and a research opportunity; an exploration of variables that can yield distinct, highly tailored solutions. With over 30 years of experience, his work is defined by a collaborative process alongside exceptional consultants and craftspeople, resulting in deeply considered, bespoke environments.
He earned his Professional Bachelor of Architecture with High Honors from the University of Texas at Austin. While at UT, Jason traveled extensively through Western Europe, Mexico, and Central America, developing a first-hand understanding of architectural history, as well as a nuanced sensitivity to planning, detailing, and material expression; qualities that continue to inform his contemporary work.
Jason is a registered architect in Texas and has contributed to the Texas Society of Architects Sustainability Committee. He regularly serves as a lecturer and guest critic at the University of Texas at Austin and UT Arlington. His work is consistently recognized, including repeated nominations to D Home’s “Best Architects in Dallas,” along with regional and national design awards juried by peers and industry leaders.Texas Architectural Registration #20259
Signe Smith, Associate aia | Principal + Business Director
She earned her Professional Bachelor of Architecture with Honors from the University of Texas at Austin. With a strong interest in both architecture and business, Signe brings a balanced and pragmatic perspective to her work. Her travels through Russia and Mexico fostered an appreciation for architecture as a dynamic framework for daily life and social change, while time spent in Europe deepened her affinity for contemporary design and precision in execution.
Signe integrates these influences with a comprehensive understanding of project delivery, ensuring a seamless transition from concept through construction to move-in day. Her work is grounded in the belief that thoughtful design is realized through both vision and execution.
